Guide

Setting up Tribal Works.

Five minutes from nothing to a village that runs itself. Everything else on this page is for when you want to fine-tune.

Installing

  1. Install Tampermonkey from tampermonkey.net. It works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera. In Chrome and Edge, also switch on Allow user scripts (or Developer mode) for Tampermonkey in the browser's extension settings - the browser asks for this now.
  2. Go to the download page and press Install Tribal Works. Tampermonkey opens a tab showing the script; press Install. You do not need an account to get this far.
  3. Open Tribal Wars and sign in as usual.
  4. A small box in the corner asks for your licence key. Paste it from your account page and press Start Tribal Works. It is remembered, so this happens once per browser.

The Tribal Works window opens in the corner of the game. It checks your licence, reads the world's settings (speed, units, night bonus) and looks around your village. Nothing happens until you press Start.

The window can be dragged anywhere and folded down to its title bar. It remembers where you left it.

Plans

A plan is a build order and an army mix. Pick the one that matches what the village is for:

  • Guide - offensive main - the classic opening for a first village: paladin, a raiding army, then the road to the academy.
  • Defensive village - wall, farm and defensive units. The right plan for a second village.
  • Offensive village, Noble train village, Catapult village, Scout village - for villages with one job.
  • Manual - builds and recruits nothing on its own; you decide everything, it still raids, defends and collects.

Each browser leans a little its own way inside a plan - slightly more of one unit, slightly less of another - so armies don't all look identical.

Overruling it

Tribal Works running Overview Villages Profiles Combat Log Settings Offensive — what this city should end up with Each batch goes to whichever unit is furthest behind. first jumps the queue. Spear fighter have 0 0 FIRST 0 Swordsman have 0 0 FIRST 0 5986 Axeman have 573 5986 FIRST 0 Archer have 0 0 FIRST 0 50 Scout have 6 50 FIRST 0 3264 Light cavalry have 292 3264 FIRST 250 Heavy cavalry have 0 0 FIRST 0 220 Ram have 24 220 FIRST 0 10 Catapult have 0 10 FIRST 0 4 Nobleman have 0 4 FIRST 0 Population 20.7k of 24k at farm 30

Anything the plan says can be changed:

  • Building targets - "wall to 15" moves the wall to the front until it gets there.
  • Unit floors - on the troops tab, the first box on a unit means "always keep at least this many, before anything else".
  • Raiding reach - the longest travel time it may send troops on raids.
  • Standing orders - for example, attack one player's village whenever your army is back to a given size, with a cooldown between hits.
  • Night bonus - tick Never land an attack during the night bonus and timed attacks wait for the bonus to end.

Keeping it running

Tribal Works lives in the game tab. It runs while that tab is open - it does not have to be the one you are looking at - and stops when you close it. For a village that works through the night:

  • leave the game open in its own browser window, on a computer that stays on;
  • turn off sleep for that computer, or at least while it is plugged in;
  • if the tab is closed or the browser restarts, just open the game again - Tribal Works starts by itself and carries on.

Bot checks

Bot check Everything has stopped. Solve it, then press "carry on". We never solve these for you. Tribal Works Bot check on en1 needs you now

When the game puts up a bot check, Tribal Works stops at once, sounds an alarm in the tab, and waits. It never solves them - that is yours to do. Solve it in the game, then press I have solved it - carry on in the Tribal Works alarm. Troops it moved out of the way come home, and it picks up where it stopped.

If you will be away for long, remember it cannot get past a bot check without you - it will simply wait.

Backups

Your strategies and settings are kept with your licence on tribal.cx, so most of the time there is nothing to do: a browser with nothing set up gets them back by itself. You can switch that off under Settings → Kept with your licence, which also removes the copy.

For everything else, including what the bot has learned about the map and its targets, press Copy setup to clipboard under Settings → Keeping a copy and paste the text somewhere safe. If the browser loses its storage, copy that text again and press Restore from clipboard.

New computer

A licence covers 2 browsers. When you move, go to your account, press Reset browsers, and install on the new one. Your settings come back by themselves the first time the game loads there. Notification tokens and addresses (Telegram, webhook) stay in each browser, so enter them again, and the master switch stays off until you press Start.

When something looks wrong

  • The window does not appear. Check Tampermonkey is enabled and Tribal Works is switched on in its dashboard, then reload the game.
  • A box in the corner says Tribal Works could not start. The add-on could not be fetched from tribal.cx: either the licence was refused (the box says why) or the site could not be reached. It keeps trying, and Try again asks straight away.
  • "Licence not valid". The window says why - expired, or too many browsers. Your account page fixes both.
  • It is not doing something you expected. Open the log: every decision is written there with its reason. Often it is saving up for something or waiting for troops to return.
